The Inner Dimensions of Fasting

The Inner Dimensions of Fasting

By Imam Ghazzali (qs)

Three Grades

It should be known that there are three grades of fasting: ordinary, special and extra-special. Ordinary Fasting means abstaining from food, drink and sexual satisfaction.

Special Fasting means keeping one’s ears, eyes, tongue, hands and feet — and all other organs — free from sin.

Extra-special Fasting means fasting of the heart from unworthy concerns and worldly thoughts, in total disregard of everything but God, Great and Glorious is He. This kind of Fast is broken by thinking of worldly matters, except for those conducive to religious ends, since these constitute provision for the Hereafter and are not of this lower world.

Those versed in the spiritual life of the heart have even said that a sin is recorded against one who concerns himself all day with arrangements for breaking his Fast. Such anxiety stems from lack of trust in the bounty of God, Great and Glorious is He, and from lack of certain faith in His promised sustenance.
To this third degree belong the Prophets, the true awliya and the intimates of God. It does not lend itself to detailed examination in words, as its true nature is better revealed in action. It consists in utmost dedication to God, Great and Glorious is He, to the neglect of everything other than God, Exalted is He. It is bound up with the significance of His words: ‘Say: “Allah (sent it down)”: then leave them to play in their vain discussions.’ [al-An’am, 6:91]

Inward Requirements

As for Special Fasting, this is the kind practiced by the righteous. It means keeping all one’s organs free from sin and six things are required for its accomplishment.

See Not What Displeases God

A chaste regard, restrained from viewing anything that is blameworthy or reprehensible, or that distracts the heart and diverts it from the remembrance of God, Great and Glorious is He. Said the Prophet, on him be peace: ‘The furtive glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Satan, on him be God’s curse. Whoever forsakes it for fear of God will receive from Him, Great and Glorious is He, a faith the sweetness of which he will find within his heart.’

Jabir relates from Anas that God’s Messenger, on him be peace, said: ‘Five things break a man’s Fast: lying, backbiting, gossiping, perjury and a lustful gaze.’

Speak Not…

Guarding one’s tongue from idle chatter, lying, gossiping, obscenity, rudeness, arguing and controversy; making it observe silence and occupying it with remembrance of God, Great and Glorious is He, and with recitation of Quran. This is the fasting of the tongue. Said Sufyan: ‘Backbiting annuls the Fast.’ Layth quotes Mujahid as saying: ‘Two habits annul Fasting: backbiting and telling lies.’

The Prophet, on him be peace, said: ‘Fasting is a shield; so when one of you is Fasting he should not use foul or foolish talk. If someone attacks him or insults him, let him say: “I am Fasting, I am Fasting!”‘

According to Tradition: ‘Two women were Fasting during the time of God’s Messenger, on him be peace. They were so fatigued towards the end of the day, from hunger and thirst, that they were on the verge of collapsing. They therefore sent a message to God’s Messenger, on him be peace, requesting permission to break their Fast. In response, the Prophet, on him be peace, sent them a bowl and said: “Tell them to vomit into it what they have eaten.” One of them vomited and half filled the bowl with fresh blood and tender meat, while the other brought up the same so that they filled it between them. The onlookers were astonished. Then the Prophet, on him be peace, said: “These two women have been Fasting from what God made lawful to them, and have broken their Fast on what God, Exalted is He, made unlawful to them. They sat together and indulged in backbiting, and here is the flesh of the people they maligned!”‘

Hear Not…

Closing one’s ears to everything reprehensible; for everything unlawful to utter is likewise unlawful to listen to. That is why God, Great and Glorious is He, equated the eavesdropper with the profiteer, in His words, Exalted is He: ‘Listeners to falsehood, consumers of illicit gain.’ [al- Ma’idah, 5:42]

God, Great and Glorious is He, also said: ‘Why do their rabbis and priests not forbid them to utter sin and consume unlawful profit?’ [al-Ma’idah, 5:63]

Silence in the face of backbiting is therefore unlawful. God, Exalted is He, said: ‘You are then just like them.’ [al-Nisa, 4:140] That is why the Prophet, on him be peace, said: ‘The backbiter and his listener are copartners in sin.’

Do Not…

Keeping all other limbs and organs away from sin: the hands and feet from reprehensible deeds, and the stomach from questionable food at the time for breaking Fast. It is meaningless to Fast — to abstain from lawful food – only to break one’s Fast on what is unlawful. A man who Fast like this may be compared to one who builds a castle but demolishes a city. Lawful food injurious in quantity not in quality, so Fasting is to reduce the former. A person might well give up excessive use of medicine, from fear of ill effects, but he would be a fool to switch to taking poison. The unlawful is a poison deadly to religion, while the lawful is a medicine, beneficial in small doses but harmful in excess. The object of Fasting is to induce moderation. Said the Prophet, on him be peace: ‘How many of those who Fast get nothing from it but hunger and thirst!’ This has been taken to mean those who break their Fast on unlawful food. Some say it refers to those who abstain from lawful food, but break their Fast on human flesh through backbiting, which is unlawful. Others consider it an allusion to those who do not guard their organs from sin.

Avoid Overeating

Not to over-indulge in lawful food at the time of breaking Fast, to the point of stuffing one’s belly. There is no receptacle more odious to God, Great and Glorious is He, than a belly stuffed full with lawful food. Of what use is the Fast as a means of conquering God’s enemy and abating appetite, if at the time of breaking it one not only makes up for all one has missed during the daytime, but perhaps also indulges in a variety of extra foods? It has even become the custom to stock up for Ramadan with all kinds of foodstuffs, so that more is consumed during that time than in the course of several other months put together. It is well known that the object of Fasting is to experience hunger and to check desire, in order to reinforce the soul in piety. If the stomach is starved from early morning till evening, so that its appetite is aroused and its craving intensified, and it is then offered delicacies and allowed to eat its fill, its taste for pleasure is increased and its force exaggerated; passions are activated which would have lain dormant under normal conditions.

The spirit and secret nature of Fasting is to weaken the forces which are Satan’s means of leading us back to evil. It is therefore essential to cut down one’s intake to what one would consume on a normal night, when not Fasting. No benefit is derived from the Fast if one consumes as much as one would usually take during the day and night combined. Moreover, one of the properties consists in taking little sleep during the daytime, so that one feels the hunger and thirst and becomes conscious of the weakening of one’s powers, with the consequent purification of the heart.

One should let a certain degree of weakness carry over into the night, making it easier to perform the (tahajjud) and to recite the praises (awrad). It may then be that Satan will not hover around one’s heart, and that one will behold the Kingdom of Heaven. The Night of Destiny represents the night on which something of this Kingdom is revealed. This is what is meant by the words of God, Exalted is He:’We surely revealed it on the Night of Power.’ [al-Qadr, 97:1]

Anyone who puts a bag of food between his heart and his breast becomes blind to this revelation. Nor is keeping the stomach empty sufficient to remove the veil, unless one also empties the mind of everything but God, Great and Glorious is He. That is the entire matter, and the starting point of it all is cutting down on food.

Look To God With Fear And Hope

After the Fast has been broken, the heart should swing like a pendulum between fear and hope. For one does not know if one’s Fast will be accepted, so that one will find favor with God, or whether it will be rejected, leaving one among those He abhors. This is how one should be at the end of any act of worship one performs.

It is related of al-Hasan ibn Abil Hasan al-Basri that he once passed by a group of people who were laughing merrily. He said: ‘God, Great and Glorious is He, has made the month of Ramadan a racecourse, on which His creatures compete in His worship. Some have come in first and won, while others have lagged behind and lost. It is absolutely amazing to find anybody laughing and playing about on the day when success attends the victors, and failure the wasters. By God, if the veil were lifted off, the doer of good would surely be preoccupied with his good works and the evildoer with his evil deeds.’ In too full of joy to indulge in idle sport, while for one who has suffered rejection laughter will be precluded by remorse.

Of al-Ahnaf ibn Qays it is reported that he was once told: ‘You are an aged elder; Fasting would enfeeble you.’ But he replied: ‘By this I am making ready for a long journey, Obedience to God, Glorified is He, is easier to endure than His punishment.’

Such are the inwardly significant meanings of Fasting.

Boyfriend? Girlfriend?

The Sheikh asked a visitor whether he was married.
The man replied that while he wasn’t married he did, however, have a girlfriend, who was also present in the gathering and whom he then introduced to the sheikh.

The Sheikh then said:

She is the most suitable lady for him, and he is the most suitable man for her. It is a bad practice that has become prevalent in our time for people to be boyfriend and girlfriend. If their friendship is going to result in marriage, then it is alright, normal. But if they are not even considering marriage, it is very bad for them to be together.

Therefore, when a man finds himself a lady friend, who it seems to him who would make him a good wife, and if she is satisfied with him as well, they should marry without delay. A couple needs some time to get to know each other, but they must not forestall making a discission. The ideal period for getting to know one another is between three days and forty days. Some people can find out enough in three days to be able to decide, and others may need up to forty – but that is the maximum (barring unusual circumstances). If a decision is deferred for longer than that, the relationship will weaken, and doubt will seize the hearts of one or both of them.

This lady is the best lady for our brother here, but our lower selves desire to have all ladies. The lower selves of men hate being limited in one woman, and demand to have absolute freedom to go with all the ladies that they may fancy. Especially in our times men want to be like a ram in a flock of ewes – one male to a hundred females. That is the ego’s demand, and that is why they see marriage as a prison for themselves.

But you must know that even if you attain absolute freedom to pursue your ego desires, and even if you manage to enjoy yourself, yourself ego is still not going to be satisfied. Material pleasures are like salt water to a thirsty person: the more he drinks, the more acute his thirst becomes. But if you give a thirsty person one cup of fresh water, he drinks and is satisfied.

Therefore, from among all ladies your wedded wife alone is permitted to you by God’s law, and if she is the one who is sweet and can quench your thirst. My advice to everyone is to drink fresh water by taking a lawfully wedded wife. Let every man with a girlfriend take her as his wife, and every lady with a boyfriend take him as her husband.

On Backbiting – Sheykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Hakkani

On Backbiting ..

Sheykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Hakkani

ISLAM teaches only one thing: how to fight against your ego. This fight is also a way of worshiping Allah Almighty.

We will now take a verse about which our master has spoken very often. This verse mentions one of the worst characteristics of our ego and thus, something which gives it a great deal of pleasure – backbiting.

The ego feeds on it and feeds it. It insists on it and consists of it. It does not want to let go of it under any circumstances and it knows the reason very well. If you take away backbiting and other similar habits to which the ego clings, it will collapse. For the ego is nothing but its attributes. Take them away, and you take it away.

It is a Divine Order to fight against our ego, to catch it, and to force it to surrender. The means for this fight is our will-power. Everyone has this will-power, but only a few use it. It has been given to us to help us in the fight against our ego, and not for any other reason. Will-power has nothing to do with the desire for food, drink, or sex. Those are habits of our animal nature which make themselves felt without will. Will only appears when we try to free ourselves from our habits.

Our body consists of habit patterns and it does not want to give them up willingly. It is averse to praying, to fasting, to reading the Qur’an, and so, for the performance of any of them, will-power is necessary. If it could, our ego would also turn them into habits and add them to all the others. But this is not possible, and so the ego tries, by hook or by crook, with all its tricks and traps, to deceive you. The clearest sign is your resistance with regard to praying, fasting, keep/ ing ritual purity, and the remembrance of Allah. If you can keep these up only through some effort of your will, take it as a good sign.
Now, here is a verse that says: You, who believe, do not backbite! For each act of backbiting is an injury and causes enmity between brothers and friends. However, Islam does not tolerate enmity caused by human beings towards each other. Therefore, the enemy of what is human in man is also the enemy of Islam. Just as the enemy of Islam is also the enemy of mankind.

The enemy of mankind, Satan, is most powerful when he can provoke us to insult and to defame one another. For he knows very well that love between us strengthens Islam and that a strengthened Islam is the greatest helper of mankind. Satan is the biggest and most dangerous enemy of the children of Adam. His aim is the destruction of mankind. But Allah Almighty warns us of him and tells us about the weapons of the destroyer. As a result, the evil one must find a way to make us savor our own self-destruction.

Before the time of the Prophet, may peace and blessings be upon him, Satan even appeared to ordinary people in his true form. Afterwards, this was forbidden to him, and only the friends of God, the saints, see him from time to time. One day a saint met him holding ashes in one hand and a jar of honey in the other. When the devil saw the friend of God, he immediately wanted to turn around and run away. But the saint called him, saying, ‘Hey, what’s the hurry ? Wait a bit and tell me what you’ve got there in your hand.’ The devil answered,’These are ashes. I’ll blow them into the face of an orphan, so his eyes will swell and fill with pus and nobody will want to come close to him.’ Satan knows, of course, that Allah Almighty has ordered us to take care of orphans. ‘I will blow ashes in their eyes’, he thought, ’so people will chase them away.’
The saint said, ‘I understand about the ashes, but what is the honey for?’

And Satan answered: ‘Oh, the honey! Wherever people meet, in any association, I will be with them. It doesn’t matter if they are two or more, I like all kinds of gatherings. As soon as I hear of one, I am there with my honey. This isn’t just any old kind of honey, you know. It’s my specialty, home/made. So I take a bit and smear it on their mouths so that their backbiting will be very sweet to them and the words will just melt on their tongues. Then they will be happy, the idiots.’

You have certainly seen how it works. We meet and sit together. Then someone makes a light remark about someone who is not present but whom everybody knows. A second remark follows, this time a little bit stronger, then a third, and one is in the midst of things, one is excited and amused, the atmosphere heats up, we are going full sail, and with full sails we sail into the abyss. The person they are backbiting about is destroyed, and as a result the slanderers themselves are destroyed.

The backbiter harms himself to the same degree that he harms the one who has been denigrated. He destroys himself, destroys humanity, and destroys Islam. Allah Almighty gives a striking image of what happens in His verse.

He asks: ‘Who likes to eat the flesh of his dead brother;’ Whoever has ears to hear will jump up from his slumber and notice what was so pleasantly lulling him to sleep. The Prophet also says that backbiting is like preying on a corpse. You speak about someone absent, someone who cannot defend himself. He is lying there like a corpse in your midst.

In this way Allah Almighty teaches us adab, good manners. He says, if you eat from your dead brother’s flesh, you will lose all honour. Do not participate. Your refusal to participate is a way of glorifying your Lord.

It is not easy to get rid of this terrible addiction. However, even if it takes a long time, do not lose courage. Why do you eat your dead brother’s flesh; All ties will be severed between the slanderer and the one who has been defamed. They will never get together and never be friends again.

Fear Allah Almighty, and follow His Prophet. Then you will be able to put this habit aside, as well as all the other terrible habits of your ego.

Take Power From Reciting “Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem”

Take Power From Reciting “Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem”

Sultan al-Awliya

Mawlana Shaykh Nazim Adil al-Hakkani

27 February 2010     |     Lefke, Cyprus

Dastoor yaa Sultanu ‘l-Awliyaa, madad yaa Rijaal Allah, madad yaa Sultan. Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem (Mawlana Shaykh stands.) La ilaaha illa-Llah, la ilaaha illa-Llah, la ilaaha illa-Llah, Sayyidina wa Nabiyyina Muhammadun Rasoolullah. Allah, zidhu izzan wa sharafa, nooran wa suroora ridwaanan wa sultanan. (Allah, give him more honor and nobility and noor and happiness and power.) Ameen, ameen, ameen. (Mawlana Shaykh sits.)

Dastoor yaa Sultanu ‘l-Awliyaa, madad! We are in need heavenly support. Dastoor, O heavenly ones. We are also saying, salaam to controller of this world, who is responsible for everything happening on this planet, dunya.

How can one person reach Allah Almighty? When He is asking something to be, He is only saying, “Be!” and it is going to be. If He is asking an ant for controlling this huge world, in just a moment Allah (swt) can do this. Therefore, Allah Almighty is making khalifah, a deputy for Mankind. Men are deputies but one only is going to be on power, not everyone. No, one is enough! And divine order is coming on him and he is looking at the Preserved Tablet and according to everything on it.

As-salaamu alaykum yaa Sayyidina, Sultanu ‘l- Awliyaa, wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, awwidduna. Help us for understanding what you are giving us to address to people. Give us a power of understanding and that is our main target, to reach our controller, our Sultan, so that we can reach everything here and Hereafter through his way.

As -salaamu alaykum, O Mankind, attenders. Attend in 24 hours, give a little bit of time, even a short time for your coming future. Try to reach something that should be useful for you after this life. You are living a life that is going to give a benefit. Therefore, try to reach something from heavenly knowledge and heavenly support, try for that purpose. Even a very short time gives to you a good chance to come in the Divine Presence, and you will be accepted by heavenly beings.
O our Master, we are saying, as you are ordering us to say, a`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytani ‘r-rajeem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Always run away from the dirty one, the dangerous one, the ugly one. All characteristics of Shaytan are as a magnet, collecting everything on it. Shaytan is collecting every badness, everything that may give people harm. Everything on it, therefore, beware as it may throw one poisoned arrow on you! Everything Shaytan is sending on people is poison. Beware from Shaytan! Take your care from Shaytan. We must repeat it all times, every time. According to high command of Allah Almighty, fadhdhakkir, addressing the Seal of Prophets (s), the divine representative of the Lord of Creation (swt) and everything, saying, “Don’t leave people to forget. Dhakkirhum, remind them for every occasion so that they can protect themselves.

If a person is coming to the level of fighting and the enemy begins to throw arrows and they are coming like this, make like this, like that. (Mawlana Shaykh ducks.) Take your care not to touch you. If arrows touching you on Earth, so easy, but if Shaytan is throwing arrows, it’s arrow are poison and it is changing your being into another form. Perhaps your out-looking (appearance) is as a man, but with poisoned arrows of Shaytan, your inner being is going to be a second Shaytan. By out-looking, people think you are from humanity, human nature. But Shaytan is asking to dress everyone with poison dressing, giving you trouble day and night, every position you will be in is haraam, sin. Shaytan’s purpose is always that you will not be in a good condition.

If you are in a good condition here then after this life that good condition is a heavenly grant to everyone. You may keep it through the graveyard, you may keep it, the Day of Resurrection. All goodness is coming through “bismillah”. Don’t forget to recite, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. If you like to be here and Hereafter in the best condition, every condition that makes you happy and in pleasure and in pleasement, come and drink from the oceans of Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem.

O People! Try to be friendly with saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahman ‘r-Raheem. When you are saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, tanzeelu ‘l-Rahmah, heavenly blessings coming on you from Allah Almighty and also from His Divine Attribute “ar-Rahman,” the Most Merciful, other blessings are coming on you. Another of His Holy Names, “ar-Raheem,” the Most Beneficent, is coming on you, running through your hearts such blessings that you can’t imagine. Therefore say (as dhikr), Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem… Huuu.

Just reaching such a holy knowledge about Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Who may say 21 times before sleeping, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, if he is passing that night, passing it through Paradise. Such a power is running through Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Keep it! So many people coming saying, “uhhh, huh.” Depression, keep for this. Keep saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, you will be okay. Commonly coming on all Mankind, but if anyone saying, daily 100 times, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, coming a new understanding with a new power reaching you. That power is protecting you here and giving to you what you are going to ask in the next life. Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, is never going to end through the tongues of believers and through surrendered people and through mu’mins and through so many people who are falling in troubles; to take away bad conditions. If he likes every badness to be taken from him and to be saved in the next life, reciting Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem is very important, very important.

But we are running for something that has no value. If you are asking to reach value through your life, for every action or every effort that you are entering say, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. It gives you power and honor and satisfaction and pleasure and pleasement. Every effort, everything that you are asking to do, say, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, and granting to you endless Power Oceans and Pleasure Oceans. Say only, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, because it is Allah Almighty’s `ismi al-`Aadham, Name of the Greatest One. You can find that Holy Name through the Lord of Heavens. Reciting Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem gives you power; Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem gives you pleasure; Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem grants you to be in existence; Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem gives to you strength in front of bad things always, who is asking to reach goodness, pleasure and success and heavenly support.

People are coming and asking, “O Shaykh, make du’a for us.” I am saying, it is so well known, if anyone asking to be in pleasure, only words for them to reach their real targets here and through graveyard and the Day of Resurrection, because (they have) endless Power Oceans, Light Oceans so big, don’t worry from anything! You can find Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, so easy for you! Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem is a heavenly top reaching on Earth for people who can’t reach up for heavenly stations. You may do here Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, you may find yourself up and up and up. Don’t worry from anything. SubhaanAllah!

The first thing Shaytan is making people to forget, is Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Most important thing through the lives of Mankind, to be friendly with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Here and Hereafter, he is going to be saved and reach highest degrees of pleasure and pleasement, and be acceptable in the Divine Presence. But firstly, Shaytan is coming and making people not to say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, and not to believe. Shaytan is coming and making such foolish ideas for people. People are thinking, “We are not in need to say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r- Raheem, we may speak as we like, our speech and our speaking is bringing us so many things.” That is shaytanic teaching!

O People! Keep reciting Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, don’t worry. If saying, one Bismillahi ‘r Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, never touching to that one a badness here and Hereafter. Now in our days, people are becoming like rocks, no sense in it. Even stones, animals and plants, everyone through their tongues are saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Everything is saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Only heedless Mankind is not saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, forgetting to say it and forgetting to teach their small ones. Say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem! Everything with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem is sweet, everything with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem is healthy for you, everything with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, is a power for you, everything with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem is making you succesful for everything you are in need to do.

If you like long life, Allah Almighty gives it with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. (Mawlana Shaykh laughs) People are trying to get a long life, are taking tablets, taking injections and so many foolish things to make themselves stronger and powerful. Many are making advertising, “Take this medicine! Take this syrup! Take this tablet! To be longer, to be up!” Instead, if people are understanding and believing in Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, this world is going to change 100%. No trouble on it, no one harming another one, no one in suffering, no one in miseries, no one is going to be depressed, no one is going to be in huzn, sadness.

Yes, enough to believe in Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, oceans, oceans, oceans coming with Bismillahi r Rahman ir Raheem, Subhanallahi ‘l-Aliyyi ‘l-Azheem. Therefore, the  biggest grant of Allah Almighty to Mankind is to make them say, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. (Mawlana does dhikr of Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem) Hungry, getting to be full and the thirsty, going to be satisfied. If drinking one well (of) water, thirstiness can’t be taken away from that person but with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, your thirst is going away. Say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, your hunger goes away, say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, your anger is going away, say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, everything harming you is going to run away from you.

That is the main blessed ocean for Mankind here, if people will reach to look, to see, to know, to understand and to taste something on Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem through spiritual looking, they will fall down from the pleasure of saying, (sings repeatedly), Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Never going to be defeated, when they are saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Allah never makes them to be defeated but they will be always victorious, every time for every purpose, for every chance. If saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, it opens doors. So many people coming and saying, “O Shaykh! We are in a very difficult position, please say du’a for us that we can be able to get out from difficult positions.”

O People! We are saying, what you learned from your religion? That means you learned nothing from your belief of Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. If you learned something from this huge religion, you would not come to me to say, “O my Shaykh, please give us an opening for pleasure and satisfaction to our hearts.” No, you continue to say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. If you fall into an ocean and you are saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, you will be saved! “For the honor of Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, save me, O my Lord, from a difficult position!” What you are learning to save you from crisis, economical crisis?  People are closed down in one circle, but they like to get out and they can’t do it. And we are saying, “O People! If you like to be saved from a weak position and bad conditions, say, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Every opening is coming after saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem!”

O People! What we can say? People are running after Shaytan and his bad ideas and bad positions. That Shaytan is saying, to you, “This is good and that is bad.” Never going to be!  But what Allah Almighty is saying, and sending from His endless oceans, you will find yourself so happy, so light, so enlightened, so in pleasure that even if you have no coin in your home and can only find dried bread, to say Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem is enough for you to reach heavenly positions, to find pleasure here and Hereafter! It is the biggest grant, you can reach every purpose here and every pleasure after this life. Try it, try it! To try something is balash, free; learn it and go away.

Who is reaching the secret power of Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem? If gold is reaching a person by material means, it is going away, but what you are reaching through your beloved powers through yourself, by saying Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, you will be a beloved one here and Hereafter, and happiness going around you, taking away sorrows. It is important for the happiness of Mankind in our days who are following shaytanic ways and falling down. You may save yourselves with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Allah makes it easy through our hearts to say it, taking away sorrows, sorrows of economic crisis; such a thing leaves you by the baraka of Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem.

You will save yourselves by saying, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem, you should say it in your heart with misbaha, praying beads, or even without, you should reach what you are asking to reach. Everything you need or you like to reach, keep to say, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. Now is worst time for Mankind. People are in worst position and everyone is complaining. Instead of complaining, they must say at least 100 times daily, Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem. More, taking sorrow from you, from your hearts and coming a special lightening on yourself, you will be happy.

May Allah Almighty grant. May Allah forgives us. Fatihah.

(Mawlana sings a favorite Turkish song:)

Yaa Muhammad canım arzular seni,
bütün hayatınızı o en sevgili en şanlı olana verin.
Rabbinin ilahi huzurunda şereflene verin.
Yaa Muhammad canım arzular seni.
Dost Muhammad canım pek sever seni.

O Muhammad, my soul desires you,
give all of your life to this One Who is the glorious.
In the presence of your God, give it with honor.
O Muhammad, my soul loves you.
O Friend Muhammad, my soul desires you so much!

Fatihah. Ameen, ameen, ameen.

Husn al-Dhann in the Nasab

Imam ibn Hajar said:

And it has been said, that the reason for honoring the pigeons of the Haram is that they are from the lineage of the two pigeons that nested on the Cave of Thawr in which the Prophet salla Allahua alayhi wa ‘alaa Aalihi wa sallam disappeared when he left for the Hijra. And you know that Husn al-Dhann suffices us, and it is not for us to look into the correctness of their nasab.

And Imam Ibn al-Jawzi rahimahullah said in his book al-Multaqat:

There was a man from the Alawites (meaning: a descendant of sayyidna Ali ibn Abi Talib may Allah ennoble his face) who moved to Balkh (the home town of mawlana Jalaluddin ar-Rumi, in present day Afghanistan) and he had a wife and daughters. The man died.

His wife said: So I left with the girls to Samarqand, fearing the malevolence of the enemies, and I arrived at a time of severe coldness, so I took the girls to a Mosque and went to try and find them some food. So I found the people surrounding a shaykh, so I asked about him and they said: this is the shaykh of the town! So I went to him and explained to him my situation.

He said to me: “Prove to me that you are Alawite”. And he did not give me any attention.

So I went back to the Mosque, and on the way, I saw an old man sitting down, surrounded by men. So I said: who is this? They said: he is the tax collector of the town, and he is a Magian. So I said to myself: Perhaps he is the one who can save me. So I went to him and told him of my situation and what happened to me with the shaykh of the town, and that my daughters are in the Mosque, with nothing to eat.

So he called for his servant and said to him: Tell your lady (i.e. the Magian’s wife) to put her clothes on.

So she wore her clothes and came out with her maidservants.

So he said to her: Go with her to the Such-and-such Mosque and take her daughters to our house.

So she came with me and took my daughters to their house, and he gave us a room in his house, and let us go into the Hammam, and and clothed us with expensive clothes and gave us all kinds of delicious foods.

So in the middle of the night, the Muslim shaykh of the town saw as if the Day of Rising had come, and the banner was above sayyidna Muhammad, salla Allahu alayhi wa ‘alaa Aalihi wa sallam. And the Prophet turned away from him. So he said: Oh Messenger of Allah, do you turn away from me and I am a Muslim man?

So the Prophet said to him: Prove to me that you are a Muslim.

This confused the man, so the Messenger of Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa ‘alaa Aalihi wa sallam said to him: Did you forget what you said to the Alawite woman? And this Palace is for the old man in whose house she is in now.

So the man woke up, crying, and went by himself looking for the Alawite woman. He was told that she was in the house of the Magian. So he came to him and said: Where is the Alawite woman?

So he said: At my house.

He said: I want her!

So he said: That is impossible.

He said: This is a thousands dinars, and you give her to me!

So he said: No, by Allah, not even by a hundred thousand dinars!

So when the shaykh insisted the Magian said to him: That dream that you saw, I saw it also, and the Palace that you saw for me is real. And you think you are better than me in your Islam. By Allah she did not enter our house without all of us becoming Muslim at her hands, and her blessings coming down upon us. And I saw the Messenger of Allah salla Allahu alayhi wa ‘alaa Aalihi wa sallam and he said to me: This palace is for you and your family because of what you did with the Alawite woman, and you are of the people of Paradise, and Allah created you believers.

– From: An-Nafahaat al-Shaadhiliyya fee Sharh al-Burda al-Busiriyya, by the imam, the muhaddith, shaykh Hasan al-’Adawi al-Hamzaawi

A man came to the spiritual master, the guide to Allah, Shams ad-Din Muhammad al-Hanafi (radi Allahu ‘anhu), and said to him: “Sayyidi, I have many children and I am very poor, so teach me Alchemy!”

So the shaykh said to him: “Stay with us an entire year, with the condition that every time you break your wudu, you renew it and pray two rak’a.”

So he did that.

When one day was left of the year, the man came to the shaykh and the shaykh said to him: Tomorrow your need will be fulfilled.

So when he came to him the next day, he said to him: Go to the well and fill this bucket with water for wudu. So when he pulled the bucket out of the well, he found it filled with gold!

He said: Oh sayyidi, I do not have a single remaining hair on my body that desires it anymore!

So the shaykh said: Pour it back, then go back to your country, for you, the whole of you, has now become Alchemy!

So he went back to his country and called the people to Allah Most High, and benefited the people greatly.

Turning the Other Cheek / A Story of Mevlana Khlaid

Jesus Christ advised his followers, that if a person hits
you on the cheek, you should turn the other. He was
a great Prophet, and even coming to us without our

Prophet’s sayings, we accept. He was showing people
how to avoid fitna, discord. No one but real sufi people
can listen to and follow that advice. By listening to that
word only, there would be no more war in the world.
Even those who say that they are Christians cannot fol-
low that advise.
Here in Damascus on Jabal Qasiyûn, a holy moun-
tain, is a great saint, Mevlana Khâlid al-Baghdâdî. He
was training people, and is one of our Grandsheikhs in
the golden chain of Naqshabandia. Our Grandsheikh
told a tale about him. A person came from Daghestan to
Mevlana Khâlid to take Tariqat. They are very proud
people, and this one came wearing pistols and daggers
and his turban at a slant over one eye. «Where are you
coming from?» he was asked. «From Daghestan.» «I
don’t give Tariqat to people coming from Daghestan»,
Mevlana Khâlid told him. «O sheikh, did Allah not send
the Prophet for Daghestan people?» He grabbed for his
pistols. «He sent for all, but I cannot give to one with
such a bad character.» Here the man became milder and
straightened his turban. «I want this Tariqat.» Mevlana
Khâlid replied: «With your anger, you cannot carry out
our orders, but you may go to some of our mureeds and
observe their state. Now go to the meat market in the
city and find a person with a long stick on his shoulder,
with unwashed sheep’s stomachs hanging from it which
he is selling. Give him a slap on the neck and then come
to me.»
That person he was sent to find was a learned man.
All learned men are so proud, wearing big turbans like
me. In order to break his pride, he was sent to sell the

stomachs of sheep. Here is another tale within this tale
for the benefit of every proud person. One learned man
came to Abû Yazîd, Sultan al-‘ârifîn, and asked to be
his disciple. «Oh scholar, we have some conditions.» he
said. «Yes, I am ready to accept them.» «You will shave
your head and beard and take a bag of walnuts to the
main square, where there are many children playing.
Sit there and call to all boys, «Who gives me one slap on
the head, I will give him one walnut.» «Oh sheikh, what
kind of order is that? Like this is your Tariqat?» «Yes.
If you like, come. If you don’t like, go.» Abû Yazîd was
doing this to make the man’s pride come down. If you
say to an architect, ‘Build for me a building here,’ and
yet not giving him permission to destroy the old ones,
then he cannot build anything. Sheikhs must, destroy
the ego’s old building before building a new one. There-
fore that man was ordered to sell unwashed sheeps’ sto-
He found him and slapped him on the neck, shouting:
«Oh you dirty person, why don’t you wash these before
selling them?» The man turned and said: «Oh my brot-
her, give me one more slap.» Returning to the sheikh,
he told him what had happened. Mevlana Khâlid said:
«You will go to another market. There is an auctioneer
there. Spit in your hand and give him a slap.» He went
there quickly, and found the man shouting prices. He
gave him a strong slap, saying: «Why are you shouting,
no one is deaf here.» The auctioneer only smiled.
He returned to Mevlana Khâlid and told him what
had happened. «There is another I shall send you to,»
he said. Sitting in the zawiya they could see from the

window an old farmer ploughing in the fields below.
«Take this stick and hit him.» directed the sheikh. He
went and struck him on the back, whereat the farmer
took up his stick and hit one of his oxen, saying: «Yalla,
we are so lazy, get up, plough faster.» The man retur-
ned to the sheikh and was told, «You were not hitting
hard enough, go and hit strongly.» He went and struck
the farmer again; all the farmer did was hit the second
ox, saying: «Get up, we are so lazy.» Returning, he was
told, «Go again, you must hit him with all your power.»
This time when he hit him, the stick broke and the
farmer fell down; but turning over, he took the man’s
hand and began apologizing: «My sheikh sent you to
me, because I am so lazy, and now your hand is sore
from striking me. I ask forgiveness for the Judgement
Day.» «Oh my son», Mevlana Khâlid said to him after-
wards «Look now at these three people, their positions.
The first is a beginner. The second is ready for this Ta-
riqat, and that farmer is my mureed, a real follower. If
you can be patient like them, then come to me. When
you are satisfied with those conditions, then I shall give
you Tariqat.»
Who is going to keep the reality of Jesus Christ’s sa-
ying? That is high character from all religions, high cha-
racter of all Tariqat followers. The Prophet, peace be
upon him, was asked: «What is faith?» he replied with
one word: ‘Sabr’, patience. When you have patience
you have faith. Lose patience and no more faith is with
you. You may try yourself in so many unliked things.
Don’t say, ‘For so long I am patient, but at last my pa-
tience gives out’. That is like a person drawing water

from a deep well, with the rope and bucket with great
difficulty, being patient up to the last foot, and then
saying ‘Iam tired now,’ and then letting go of the rope.
What is its benefit? Patience is up to the end, taking
the water out and using it. Remember this example all
your life. So many people are harmed for their lack of
patience. Some people read, read, and read until the
last pages and then they say ‘I am fed up’ and quit; or
fasting all day until one hour before sunset and then
breaking it. With your wife, your children, your neigh-
bours, you must be patient. Whoever is patient, will
reach victory.
That man returned home and after three months he
came back. No pistol, no dagger, ready for the condi-
tions. Mevlana Khâlid said to him: «Take this axe and
rope and go to the mountain and cut some wood and
bring it here.» Then he sent after him a powerful man,
with instructions to frighten him and take his axe and
rope. They met on the mountain, where he cursed him
and took away the axe and rope, and chased him away.
Returning to the sheikh, the man was asked: «Oh my
son, did you see a bear on the mountain?» «Such a bad
person there, he took my axe and rope and threatened
me.» «Oh my son, you are useless. When he took them
from you, you must go to the market and sell your
watch and buy another axe and rope and go back and
try again. My mureed gives his soul for my order.» He
said: «Oh my lord, just now I know what you are as-
king. I am giving you my soul.» Then Mevlana Khâlid
gave him authority and sent him to the Chechen peo-
ple. Precious things are not given cheaply, no.
