The Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said “”He who clings fast to my Sunnah (way of life) when my Ummah is corrupt, will receive the Reward of a hundred martyrs.”
One must affirm that there can be absolutely no doubt in the fact that each and every Sunnah of our beloved Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is considered supreme and well worthy of emulation by a true believer of and follower of his esteemed lifestyle. In fact a true lover of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would be prepared to give his life for the practical preservation of even one Sunnah. A true Ummati of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is one who endeavors to emulate every Sunnah, whether it is connected to the Ibaadat (worship) of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam or his habit or lifestyle (the manner of his eating, walking, dressing etc.)
The tying of the turban is a ‘Sunnat-e-Mustamirrah’ (perpetually adhered to practice of Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam has enjoined the tying of the turban upon us. It has been reported: “Tie the turban. It will increase you in forbearance.” (Fathul Baari) It is also reported that somebody enquired of Hadhrat Ibn Umar Radhiallahu anhu whether the tying of the turban was sunnat or not. He replied in the affirmative.
“The turban distinguishes the Muslims from the Mushriks” Prophet Mohamed sala allahu alayhi wa salam
“The turban is the honour of a Mu’min and represents the dignity of the Arabs. When the Arabs will stop wearing the turban, their respect will be lost” (Dailami)
Hadith on Turbans ..
Hadhrat Jaabir Radhiallahu anhu reports that on the occasion of the conquest of Makkah, Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam entered Makkah Mukarramah while wearing a black turban. (Sahih Muslim Vol.1 Pg439)
In Sahih Muslim and Nasa’i, Sayyidina ‘Amr bin Hurayth Radhiyallahu ‘anhu says: “That scene is still before my eyes, when Sayyidina Rasulullah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, was reciting the khutbah on the mimbar. He wore a black turban on his mubaarak head, and its shamlah (the end portion of the turban) was between his shoulders.”
Ibn ‘Umar, radhiyallahu anhu, reports: “When Rasulullah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, fastened an ‘amaamah (turban), he used to put the shamlah between his shoulders. (i.e. he used to put it on the back).” Nafi’ says: “I had seen ‘Abdullah bin Umar, radhiyallahu anhu, do it in the same manner.” ‘Ubaydullah, who is the student of Nafi’, says: “in my time the grandson of Abu Bakr, radhiyallahu anhu, Qaasim bin Muhammad and the grandson of ‘Umar, radhiyallahu anhu, Saalim bin ‘Abdullah did the same.”
Sulaiman bin Abdullah says I saw those Sahaba who were from the Muhajireen-e-Awwaleen (those Sahaba who were among the first to migrate to Medina – an indication of their status and rank) wearing turbans of cotton material. The colours were black, white, green, red and yellow. Some would tie it in such a fashion that they would first place one end of the turban on their heads, then the topee and then continue tying the turban on the fold of the topee. They would not wrap it from under the chin. (vol.8 pg. 241)
In Ibn Abi Shayba’s Musannaf, Ibn Jarir al-tabari’s Tafsir, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Abi Hatim, and Ibn Mardawayh on the authority of `Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr: The latter was wearing a yellow turban on the day of Badr, so the angels descended wearing yellow turbans.
In Ibn Ishaq’s Sira and in Tabarani, on the authority of Ibn `Abbas: On the day of Hunayn the angels wore Red turbans.
Virtues of the Turban ..
Nabi Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is reported to have said: “Hold on to the turban as it is a sign of the angels. Also let the loose end hang from the back.” (Baihaqi)
“Adopt the turban as it will increase your forbearance.” (Mustadrak of Hâkim)
“Some of Allah Ta’âla’s angels stand at the door of the Musjid and seek repentance on behalf of those wearing white turbans.” (Al Maqaasidul Hasanah pg.466)
Allah Ta’âla causes his mercy to descend on the people wearing turbans on the day of Jummah and his Angels make du’â for such people.” (Dailami)
The reward of the Salah performed while wearing the turban is multiplied 25 times while that Jumu’ah performed with the turban is multiplied (Dailami has reported this in his Musnad from Ibn Urnar (Radiallahu Anhu)
The angels attend the Jumu’ah while wearing turbans. Hence, those people who are wearing turbans receive the benefit that the angels make dua for them till sunset. (Dailami)
The Jumu’ah performed while wearing a turban is 70 times superior to a Jumu’ah without a turban. (Dailami)
Two rakaats of Salah performed while wearing the turban are superior to seventy rakaats performed without a turban. (Narrated by Jaabir Radiallahu Anhu)
